2-26-23 Setlist: Great Things Tremble What He's Done Son of David Sermon Notes: Key Passage: Then David died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. David had reigned over Israel for forty years, seven of them in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. Solomon became king and sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established. 1 Kings 2:10-12 Key Verse: These are the names of David’s mightiest warriors. 2 Samuel 23:8 Key Verse: There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions of Moab. Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. 2 Samuel 23:20 Key Verse: Once, armed only with a club, he killed an imposing Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with it. 2 Samuel 23:21 Key Passage: Deeds like these made Benaiah as famous as the Three mightiest warriors. He was more honored than the other members of the Thirty, though he was not one of the Three. And David made him captain of his bodyguard. 2 Samuel 23:22-23 1. God will choose you because of your potential not your past. Key Passage: Then all of Adonijah’s guests jumped up in panic from the banquet table and quickly scattered. Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, so he rushed to the sacred tent and grabbed on to the horns of the altar. 1 Kings 1:49-50 Key Passage: Word soon reached Solomon that Adonijah had seized the horns of the altar in fear, and that he was pleading, “Let King Solomon swear today that he will not kill me!” Solomon replied, “If he proves himself to be loyal, not a hair on his head will be touched. But if he makes trouble, he will die.” 1 Kings 1:51-52 2. When you are in God’s will, no weapon formed against you will prosper. Key Verse: For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 Key Verse: “…no weapon formed against you shall prosper” Isaiah 54:17 3. Set up boundaries with people who have hurt you. Key Passage: Then King Solomon made a vow before the Lord: “May God strike me and even kill me if Adonijah has not sealed his fate with this request. The Lord has confirmed me and placed me on the throne of my father, David; he has established my dynasty as he promised. So as surely as the Lord lives, Adonijah will die this very day!” So King Solomon ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada to execute him, and Adonijah was put to death. 1 Kings 2:23-25 Key Passage: So Benaiah son of Jehoiada returned to the sacred tent and killed Joab, and he was buried at his home in the wilderness. Then the king appointed Benaiah to command the army in place of Joab, and he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of Abiathar. 1 Kings 2:34-35 Key Passage: But may I, King Solomon, receive the Lord’s blessings, and may one of David’s descendants always sit on this throne in the presence of the Lord…” So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon’s grip. 1 Kings 2:45-46b 4. When we serve God, our impact is greater than we can every imagine. Discussion Questions: 1. What do you feel like God is saying to you through this message? 2. What can you learn from Benaiah? 3.
